The crucial stage in the GodsOwn/Beertown hop project happened on Tuesday afternoon.
The last of the hops were dropped, picked, and put straight into the hopback within an hour of being cut down.
GodsOwn brewer Godfrey Quemeneur put together 700L of a big, up-front new world IPA, with an estimated 7-8% abv. While he was slogging away inside, the wet week took an afternoon off and GodsOwn’s general manager Rachel Downes picked the last of the hops – with assistance from Beertown’s ‘Mr Clunky Thumbs’.
We gathered just under 2.5kg of smoothcone hops, grown onsite at GodsOwn’s brew bar in rural Hawke’s Bay. These were topped up with another kilo of lightly dried hops, picked there on Sunday afternoon.
So 3.5kg of smoothcone was squeezed into the hopback and the wort was slowly pumped through – and the heat exchanger didn’t block at all. Win! It’s fermenting now and Holy Hop Green IPA will be available in early May.
