News

Emerson's new brewery opened yesterday. A bow-tied Richard Emerson welcomed guests from around New Zealand to the shiny new $25 million plant on Dunedin's Anzac Ave. Richard's mother Ingrid performed the formal opening duties, and Dunedin band The Chills performed the music. The new brewery is planned to produced 2.5ML in its first year, increasing to 8ML in future. The new site includes a restaurant/bar and will be profiled on Beertown.NZ soon.

Martin Townshend took to Facebook this week to explain why Townshend Brewery has pulled out of contract brewing with Tuatara: "We are sorry to hear the beer has not been getting to your glass as great as it should be. Last year we took a big jump and decided to have some batches of beer contract brewed and distributed by our friends at Tuatara. Unfortunately it has not gone to plan, as we all wished, resulting in a drop of quality in some beer by the time it reached your fridge. Consequently we are bringing production and distribution back to Nelson to restore the level of quality that we expect you to receive. We now have a new focus for distribution in-house with closer monitoring through producing high quality small batch beer, with an eye towards local brewery expansion to meet the demand rather than an outsourced approach. We request you order direct from Townshend's for the latest fresh beer direct from the brewer while we enlist a few professionals to manage these logistics in the future."

New releases

Fork Brewing Skywalker Oaked Imperial Stout (9%) - we play around with some toasted American Oak blocks, and get those flavours into a big, hoppy American Imperial Stout. The result is bourbon-esque beer, laced with coffee, chocolate and vanilla decadence, whilst maintaining good drinkability. The beer is at its most intriguing as it warms, allowing the silky wood-derived vanilla and coconut notes to show themselves and meld seamlessly with the malt. Available from today.

Sunshine Brewery's Grommet Pilsner (4.5%) - a New Zealand pilsner with all-NZ hops - Riwaka, Motueka and Nelson Sauvin. Available exclusively at Sunshine's Taproom from tomorrow, 50L only.
