Epic Armageddon "Definitively New Zealand's best beer"
When Epic Armageddon took out the trophy for best Strong Pale Ale at the 2016 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards (BGONZAs), it officially became this country’s most awarded beer.
In the 10 years since the Brewers Guild Awards started in 2007, Epic Armageddon has claimed five trophies – in 2009, 2010 (for the barrel-aged version), 2011, 2015 and 2016. No other beer has won five BGONZA trophies. The next most awarded beers, with four trophies each, are Three Boys OysterStout (2007, 2010, 2011 and 2014) and Tuatara Hefe (2009, 2011, 2012, 2016).
Winning the Strong Pale Ale (IPA) category for the second year in a row also continued a run of success for Armageddon around the world over the past 18 months. In that time, it has claimed five major trophies – twice at the BGONZAs, the 2015 Australian International Beer Awards, the 2015 Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival and the 2016 New World Beer and Cider Awards.
Author and journalist Michael Donaldson, who took out his second Beer Writer of the Year BGONZA said the unprecedented five trophies at New Zealand’s premier beer awards was enough to justify Armageddon IPA as New Zealand’s best beer. “In my job, writing about beer, I’m often asked `what’s New Zealand’s best beer?’. It’s a question I used to dodge. Finally, I have a definitive answer: Epic Armageddon IPA,” Donaldson said.

Harrington's Black IPA (6.2%) - This Black IPA is the first in Harrington's Seasonal Selection series. Brewed using Supernova malt from Gladfield Malt. The unusual characteristic of this malt is that it adds caramel flavours without additional sweetness or roasted notes, giving brewers an alternative option to balance the beer without sacrificing flavours. Harringtons felt Supernova deserved an all New Zealand high hop backing of Cascade and Nelson Sauvin.
Epic LaRger imperial pilsner (8.5%) - Made with German Pilsner malt, US grown hop varieties with German parentage of noble heritage. Extra pale in colour, floral/herbal aroma, herbal hops and malt sweetness dominate the flavour, with a cleansing, snapping bitter finish. Getting dyslexics shittered all over again!
Epic Dankomatic IPA (7.6%) - Big aromatic resinous hops with hints of piney dank resin and spring onion. Luscious oily hop and malt sweetness.
Horsebox Juggernaut IPA (5.7%) – With a sweet malt finish and nutty citrus flavour from Amarillo & Simcoe Hops, this brew is a bit of an unstoppable force. Released this Saturday in select venues around NZ to celebrate Horsebox's first anniversary.
Horsebox Bare Knuckle Bright Ale (4.8%) - We brewed at Stainless Brewing Company in Christchurch and it didn't take long for Phil & head brewer Cam from Southpaw Brewing Company to decide on a beer to co-lab on for the second. "It hits your nose so hard your mouth feels what's coming next". Centennial along with some of New Zealand's finest hops make up this fresh floral, massively aromatic bright ale. Released this Saturday in select venues around NZ to celebrate Horsebox's first anniversary.
Horsebox Perfect Storm US IPA (5.8%) – Queenstown's beer scene has been getting really exciting since Pascal and his team opened Smiths Craft Beer House in November last year. After a great night hanging out with the crew, Pascal & Phil came up with a birthday brew idea to take up the third in this trilogy. Good food, good times and good brews make for a perfect storm of elements to create something special among friends. US Cascade & Simcoe smash your palate in a fruit punch flavour profile that we hope you all love. Released this Saturday in select venues around NZ to celebrate Horsebox's first anniversary.
Carlsberg Rebrew dark Munich lager (5.8%) - Appearance: warm brownish glow since it is brewed with Munich and a hint of crystal & chocolate malt. Aroma: Roasted, caramalised and malty aromas from the floor-malted Munich malt blend smooth with the floral hoppyness from Mittelfrueh hops. Taste: Light caramel sweetness with a smooth bitterness and a low carbonation melting with the roundness from the long cold fermentation and maturation on the oak barrels.
