News

Official Beertown.NZ Christmas Do - You're invited. It's a small HQ here at Beertown.NZ: no colleagues, no stationary cupboard, no office, not even a desk. But the 2016 Beertown Christmas Do has a new brew and you're invited to the launch. Last month I put down a brew with Black Dog Brewery and we will be launching the beer - Kilikiti Pasifikale - next Tuesday 20 December at Black Dog, 19 Blair Street, Wellington from 4pm. Knock off early, come down, and enjoy a chat about the year of beer and what's coming in 2017. Tell your boss you have a meeting in Beertown!

Beer drinkers - Kaikoura needs you! - after some delays caused by that earthquake thing on 14 November, Kaikoura's Emporium Brewing has beer, kegs and flowing taps - all it needs is thirsty beer drinkers. Emporium's Paul Finney says the brewery's tap room has reopened with three beers available - Citramatic APA, Ambereye American Rye Amber Ale, and Obsidian stout. The taproom's open from 2-6pm at 57A Beach Road. And if you're there you will certainly deserve a beer - access is still limited to daylight travel only, by the stimulating Inland Road, and (unlike Emporium) State Highway One is still months away from reopening. "The biggest problem we face looking forward is the lack of tourists," Paul says. "Kaikoura is still a beautiful place with so much to offer, it's still worth the journey! So please, please come and visit, Kaikoura needs you!" If you're just not that intrepid, there's the Kegs For Kaikoura fundraiser in Christchurch on Christmas Eve.

Festival passes giveaway - win double passes to two Summer Beer Festivals. Beertown has double passes to give away for Mount Maunganui's Beast of a Feast and the Queenstown Summer Beer Festival. Both festivals are new events on the craft beer calendar, and will feature local brewers, the best of the rest of New Zealand, matched with local food and entertainment. To go into the draw to win a double pass to either event, go here. Good luck!

Events this week

Old Beer 2: Another Evening of Aged Beer - 6pm tomorrow, Hashigo Zake, 25 Taranaki St, Wellington. Last year's old beer tasting went so well, we've decided to hold it again! We'll be seeing how a few of the beers are tasting a year on, and a whole lot of new old beers. Traditionally beers that age well are strong and malty, but recently this wisdom has been challenged by a few members of the beer community who claim other styles age just as well. At this tasting we'll be trying aged examples of both, in a quest to answer the age old question: "is fresh best?"

Epic Brewery's 11th Birthday Knees-Up! - Friday & Saturday, Malthouse, 48 Courtenay Pl, Wellington. We'll be pouring 13 beers from Epic Beer (because why make it 11?), and we'll also be pouring a Gin & Tonic on tap! (Just because we can.)

New New New Launch - Friday from noon, Brothers Beers, 90 Wellesley St West, Auckland. It's New! New New New! Dunedin's freshest brewery is having their Auckland launch at Brothers on Friday 16th December!

Zeelandt Brewery Christmas Party - 4pm Friday, Zeelandt Brewery, 14 Shaw Rd, Eskdale, Hawkes Bay. Let's get merry! Live music by the Pukes, Paella A Go Go cooking pork belly paella and a vegetarian paella as well as mussels steamed in Zeelandt beer, wine by Petane Station!

A Very Punky Christmas - 5pm Friday, Punky Brewster Craft Beer Fillery, 22b Tyne St, Christchurch

Cali/Cascadia Tap Takeover - Friday & Saturday, Husk, 62 Ghuznee St, Wellington.
