Wanaka Beerworks teams with NASA

Last week home brew enthusiasts amongst the NASA High Pressure Balloon team partnered with Wanaka Beerworks to create a beer that would mark the imminent launch of the balloon and pay homage to ballooners of days gone by. Early ballooners thought it was the smoke from fire that caused balloons to lift off. Later it became clear that it was heat that inflated and lifted balloons to increasingly greater heights. Today, NASA is using helium to get the necessary lift for its pumpkin-shaped Super Pressure Balloon, which launches from Wanaka to altitudes as high as 33.5 km—well into the stratosphere. Helium is scarce, but heat, pumpkin and smoke are easy to come by. Stratosbeer is an homage to the ballooners of past and present, a smoky pumpkin ale. Please note NASA are keen to ensure it is clear to readers that this was done in off-duty time.

 

New releases

Outlier Cartel From Such Great Heights North East IPA (4.5%) - A sessionable NE IPA, crammed with German hops and ripe rockmelon for added juice impression. It pours a bright and hazy orange hue, with a persistent head. The malt base comprises oats, wheat and barley. Available now from Beertique.

Fork Brewing Bear Trappist Belgian Stout (5.6%) - Flavour: Smooth, decadent mouthfeel with rum-like booziness and subtle hop bitterness. Floral esters with some boiled lolly flavours mid-palate. Finishes clean with some boozy fruit cake notes, coffee and a hint of chocolate. Aroma: Subtle hints of yeast spice – nutmeg, clove and an almost Speculaas (Dutch spice mix) character. Underlying notes of carob and caramel with a little stewed plum. Look: Light amber with a subtle, hop-polyphenol haze. Hops: Riwaka Malt: Pilsener, Munich, CaraPils, Wheat, Dark Crystal, Chocolate Yeast: Trappist High Gravity and Trappist Blend (including both Saccharomyces and Brettanomyces species). Other: Unfiltered, unfined and matured in keg to capture natural carbonation. IBU: 30 Available on handpull now at Fork & Brewer.

Sunshine Brewery MF of the Year Rye-PA (7%) - Lots of Big American Hops (Citra, Cascade, Chinook and Simcoe). Supported by a solid Malt and Rye backbone. Named from the initials of our assistant brewer/bar wizard Mal Furlan (who brewed it) and his love of ‘80’s Glam Metal (e.g.Motley Crue). Available from Thursday at the Sunshine Brewery taproom.

New Release Tuesday: Choice Bros/Modern Times City of the Wind IPA - 5pm today, Hashigo Zake, 25 Taranaki St, Wellington. Head down around 5pm to try Choice Bros Brewing latest IPA from his brand new brewkit. Kerry brewed this with Matt from Modern Times Beer as an ode to City of the Sun (referring to sunny San Diego). City of the Wind, perfectly named for Welly is a monster glass of IPA dankness. Brewed with Gladfield malts, and a mix of Citra and Motueka hops plus Eureka hop oil brought over from the States. Coming in at 7.2%, we'll be serving up City of the Wind in 300ml fancy glasses and 473ml pints.

Four Emerson's beers matched with four spirits, matched with four Kapiti cheeses. Attendees will also get a complimentary half pint of Emerson's fresh hop beer on arrival! Rare and Wild Ticketed Tasting - 7pm Wednesday 19 April, Brothers Beer, 90 Wellesley St West, Auckland. Brothers Beer have paired up with Beer Without Borders, one of the country's best importers of incredible international beers to bring you a tasting like no other. Our Rare and Wild tasting will feature amazing rare and sour styles for lovers of some of the funkiest, hardest to find beers anywhere. Hopstock 2017 - 19-24 April, various venues, Wellington. http://craftbeercapital.com/hopstock/about Hopstock is a celebration of New Zealand's hop harvest, specifically the fresh-hopped beers that can only be crafted in a very small window following the annual hop harvest. These beers from yet to be confirmed Wellington and NZ breweries, will be poured across our Craft Beer Capital bars, including a few first time Hopstock venues!

2017 Fresh Hop Homebrew Competition Grand Final - 3pm, Friday 21 April, Fork & Brewer, 14 Bond St, Wellington. The final round of judging for the Annual NZ Fresh Hop Homebrew competition. Preliminary judging will take place in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch - the top beers that show case the Fresh Hop character will then be judged against each other for the chance to take out Champion 2017 Fresh Hop Homebrewer. Anyone is welcome to come along and watch as our offical judges taste and judge the homebrew enteries.

Cellar Opening Tasting Night - 5pm Thursday 27 April, Beer Library, 363 Colombo St, Christchurch. We're breaking into the beer cellar for the first time on Thursday 27th April, and inviting you all to join us for a tasting night! We've been hiding away rare and vintage beers in our cellaring fridge, including (to name a few) barrel-aged beers, barleywines, imperial stouts, and sours...it's high time we cracked some open! Speight’s Brewery in Dunedin is on the lookout for an experienced, passionate and talented Venue Manager to lead our Brewery Tour team, retail shop and cellar door.  The Speight’s Brewery is an icon in Dunedin and the tours are one of the most visited sites in the Otago region. In August 2017, we will enter an exciting phase of change with the opening of a new cellar door and renovated retail shop.
