Roosters' brewery for sale

After 24 years in family ownership, Hawke’s Bay’s Roosters Brew House is for sale. Founders Chris & Jill Harrison told Hawkes Bay Today they wanted to get out of beer to concentrate on their winemaking business. The brewery went on the market last week but offers close this Friday. The sale includes all brewing equipment, all buildings and land, and the associated kitchen, bar and cafe. The brewery has the potential to produce 6000L a week but is currently operating at about half of this capacity. Sales agent Rollo Vavasour claimed the brewery “would ideally suit a skilled home-brewer ready to take the next step up their beer production ladder”.

Ready to take the next step up your beer production ladder?

Tiamana Brewery founder/owner Annika Naschitski has some advice for anyone considering opening their own brewery. Her blog post So you want to start a brewery draws on her three years’ experience in planning and establishing Tiamana. Quick summary: it’s complicated. Longer summary: “In the last year it certainly feels that New Zealand’s craft beer market is reaching a level of the dreaded ‘saturation’ that makes it difficult for existing breweries to get by – and more or less impossible for new breweries to establish remarkable brands that can safely make it through the next years.”

Burn Brothers give back

On 10 September 2015, professional brewers Andrew Childs (Behemoth) and Jason Bathgate (now at McLeod's) were given a ‘free ride’ in a helicopter after a brewing accident. Their injuries meant extended stays for both in the National Burns Centre at Middlemore Hospital, South Auckland. The self-proclaimed ‘Burn Brothers’ feel certain that without that initial, swift response from Westpac Rescue Helicopter, results may have been drastically different. That’s why they’ve teamed up and brewed Free Ride 8.3% ABV Double Red IPA to benefit Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust. The beer will raise funds to help others get a ‘free ride’ to care when needed. Wellington is the first host city for this one-off brew this Friday, followed by Christchurch on 2 December and Auckland on 9 December. In addition to proceeds from the beer, venues will collect donations.

HorseBox gives back too

Nelson's HorseBox Brewing is supporting Movember with it's #FoamingMo promotion. Every HorseBox keg sold during November earns a Movember donation - to date Foaming Mo has raised $705 from selling 47 kegs. To learn more and donate go here.
