DB grabs Tuatara

Tuatara Brewing announced this morning that it has sold all shares in the business to DB Breweries.

Tuatara will continue to produce its award-winning craft beer from the current premises located on the Kapiti Coast and the pilot brewery – The Third Eye, in Wellington. Tuatara founder and master brewer Carl Vasta says he continues to be passionate about the New Zealand craft beer industry and is committed to being part of Tuatara and its future growth.

“We’re changing the shareholding, we’re not changing the recipe. Brewing beer and talking about beer is my passion. With the support of my family, we have been able to grow Tuatara into a successful business,” says Carl. “In order to take things to the next level we need assistance. That’s why we’ve teamed up with DB. Now, I intend to get back to the brewing and step out of the business end.” Simone Vasta will continue in her role as logistics manager and their son, Adam, an accomplished brewer in his own right, will also stay at the Kapiti Coast brewery to ensure continuity and quality beer.

Tuatara, established in 2000 and based in Paraparaumu, has gone from a backyard operation out of Carl and Simone’s rural home, to one of the largest craft breweries in New Zealand. In 2016, over 2 million litres of beer was produced out of the breweries.

“I have a great deal of respect for what Carl and the team have achieved and we are excited to be able to tap into their craft beer knowledge and experience”, says Andy Routley, managing director of DB Breweries. “The way we see the business developing is relatively simple: we’ll leave it to Tuatara to make great beer. We’ll help get it to more people.”

Head brewer, Eagle Brewing, Christchurch

Eagle Brewing NZ is a growing micro brewery based in Christchurch Canterbury. We produce a wide range of beer styles and have recently started to delve into sour, aged and barrel aged beers. We are currently investigating opportunities for brewery expansion over the next few years to allow increased production to meet demand. We self distribute nationally in NZ; do most of our own sales work and have recently invested in a small packaging line onsite.

We are now looking for a head brewer with a minimum of 12 months experience in brewing commercially to join our small team and help us grow to the next level and beyond. The position is full time with overall responsibility for meeting current and future demands as our sales continue to grow.

Maintaining inventory of raw materials and finished product, continuous improvement of current range and development of new diverse beers is also part of the role.  We envisage a long term position so NZ residency or citizenship is preferred with possible benefits being offered for long term commitment to being part of our future for the right person.

The brewery is very manual with little automation so the applicant must be physically fit and have no existing medical condition which will impede his or her ability to carry out their duties. We value the rapport we have with our customers and hope to cultivate an inclusive, welcoming and relaxing space. As such, we’re looking for somebody who shares these values, is great with people of all walks and likes some good banter.

The position will be Thursday through Sunday, and will involve long days at times. A duty managers license and experience in a busy, dynamic setting is essential. Knowledge of and a passion for good beer is a bonus. We offer: An enjoyable work environment, a fair wage, and some sweet staff perks!
