Brewers Association NZ Director leaves quick fastly

Kevin Sinnott, the Brewers Association’s Director of External Relations NZ, left the organisation last week. His leaving was announced by CEO Brett Heffernan on Tuesday and Kevin left on Friday. Kevin told Beertown.NZ he is not going on to another job at this stage and is looking forward to spending time with his family. The Brewers Association has just two New Zealand members – Lion and DB Breweries – and was behind the controversial introduction of the Beer The Beautiful Truth programme in February.

Moa claims No1 craft beer spot, announces reduced losses

Moa Group’s annual results released today show a loss of $2.35 million for the financial year ending 31 March. This is less than the $2.97m loss recorded in the previous FY. It’s revenue increased by 26% while it managed to maintain gross margin at just under 30%. Moa CEO Geoff Ross says Moa has taken top spot in supermarket craft beer sales: “The Moa Brand has the number one and number two products in the 12 pack segment of craft beer in New Zealand grocery according to recent Nielsen Scantrack data. Moa has now also achieved the number one spot in the singles segment of craft beer.” Moa’s results are available here

New releases

Garage Project/Jameson Whiskey Rebel County Strong Ale (13%) - The relationship between Jameson and Garage Project is inspired by the Jameson family motto Sine Metu, meaning without fear, and this has been the guiding principle behind the collaboration. The unique collaboration has demanded a unique beer. Inspired by the distinctive oak driven flavours of Jameson whiskey, Garage Project created a fiercely strong blonde ale, brewed with Irish malt, maize, honey, hazelnut, vanilla and dried apricots and aged in sherry and bourbon barrels.

Sunshine Brewery Pre(H)emptive Strike East Coast Pale Ale (5%) - A collaboration with local hemp farmers Taipukenga Trust. Brewed with NZ Pilsner, oats and local hemp seed flour in the mash, and hemp seed flour again added late in the boil. The spicy character of the seeds is balanced out by generous hop additions of Chinook and Simcoe. Back due to popular demand and on tap from Thursday at The Beer Spot, Rising Tide, Craft Hamilton, Little George, Miss White’s, Brew Union, Westshore Beach Inn, and Rogue and Vagabond from Friday.

Sawmill Brewery Baltic Porter (8.0%) - A beer brewed in mimicry of the Russian Imperial Stouts and British Porters. With aromas of plum, cocoa, spice and dark bread. Finishes dry.

Sawmill Brewery DunkelRyezen (4.8%) - A dark rye beer fermented with a German Hefeweizen yeast strain. Light chestnut and slightly hazy in appearance, this beer leads on the aroma with banana, dried fruit, and toasted rye bread. This is followed with a rich, viscous mouth feel due to the rye malt, and exhibits flavours of toasted bread and stonefruit, with a hint of clove and earthy spice. Carbonated highly for a refreshing finish
