City of Ales tickets & volunteer positions available now
Auckland's City of Ales has been revived for 2017. The popular festival will be held in two sessions on Saturday 14 October at the Maritime Room on Princes Wharf. Organiser Steve Wood says guests can expect more than 24 beers matched with a tasty menu. "For the first time in Auckland's City of Ales history we are doing things a little different. Expect to be dazzled by the Taite Prize finalists, Hopetoun Brown who will be roaming the City of Ales Festival as you buzz from beer to beer. The Supergroove horn section will be stomping around with a very special guest, multi-instrumentalist Finn Scholes - arguably the finest trumpet player in the country."

Epic Big Bang Double IPA (8.9%) - Massive amounts of both English and German Pale malts and big banging NZ and US grown hops. A beer with a name like Big Bang you know is going to deliver some pretty serious hop aroma, and hop flavour. Best drunk from a Spiegelau IPA glass to maximize the hop intensity. This is the first beer since Hop Zombie that Luke has suggested that the amount of hops in it may have some impact on the mind beyond just the effect of the 8.9% abv.
Sparks Repetition Classic Session Ale (4%) - Repetition can itself be a form of change, each release in the Session Ales series will be a different style but all with the same premise; balanced and low strength beer that's highly drinkable. The first release is what we consider a classic session ale. Its 4% ABV is held up with a biscuity malt base, a high mash temperature ensures enough dextrine's are left behind to hold the beer together. An english yeast adds a subtle complexity to the Vienna and crystal malts and a very delicate dose of Mosaic and Citra lend a light citrusy finish. Its a quenching and balanced ale who’s complexity lies in the space created by subtlety. Go here for the recipe.
